#SandraBland and #Changeling

We aren’t aware of all the facts. True.

But to somehow insinuate that Sandra Bland taking her own life exonerates the Police department in question, I think, speaks highly of the moral depravity we have been digging ourselves into as a culture.

Timing couldn’t be any more perfect. I saw Changeling yesterday on netflix. And yes I highly recommend it. It gives a very clear perspective of the consequences when the deadly cocktail of Injustice mixed with Power is given to a group of people with Authority. NOT ONE SINGLE living soul would in their right mind argue that, had Christine Collins (wonderfully played by Angelina Jolie) taken her own life as a result of the sequence of events #NoSpoiler, would somehow vindicate LAPD? C’mon!!!

The irreversible fact is that a life was lost. Suicide or not, those  famous red stripes are turning crimson from Sandra Bland’s  blood stains. #BlackLivesMatter #joiedeVivre

#ASHWednesday: The Beginning of Lent.

Lenten Reflections. [2.18.15]

During Mother Angelica’s led morning rosary[1], on the second luminous mystery – The wedding at Cana – I couldn’t help but draw comparisons between the following:

– The beginning of lent and my resolve to draw closer to Christ, often ending Lent on the resurrecting joy of Easter, yet feeling pretty mediocre about the expectations and goals I set for myself during Lent. #pathetic

– Jesus began his public ministry by changing water into wine, and ultimately ending his public ministry by turning wine into his blood. #perfection

And so with these ashes I received yesterday, I begin the last Lenten season of my 20’s [2] on #ASHtag Wednesday.

In my opinion, there is a lot of salvific wisdom is acknowledging that Christ started his public ministry on the miracle of turning water into wine. What does it mean for me and how does it relate to the beginning of lent?

Lent_2013_40days

Water was available. Water is ordinary. Water proved necessary.

#Available: Yes. Funny enough, at work, before I schedule meetings with my boss, I check his outlook calendar. And it quickly becomes frustrating when I can’t even sync-up a time for us to meet. Same with God: The good news is that God is ALWAYS available, that’s never been the question. The conundrum is ME! My availability is the prerequisite for us to meet. I need to make myself available for God, present to Christ in all time. End of story.  It makes no sense for him to use me, if I have little to no time carved out to draw a POA “plan of action” together, whether it be in the form of charity, fasting, but most importantly prayer. Availability connotes receptivity. All the great saints made themselves available. Mary was most certainly available. Eve was not available, she was busy.

#Ordinary:  Yes. By virtue of my availability, I humble myself enough to become ordinary to Christ. This is what I for long failed to realize. It’s not about what I do (give up) for Lent. It took me nearly three decades to understand that it’s all about how I make myself available, how ordinary/humble I become to Christ. It is often said, Christ doesn’t call those who are equipped, He equips those he calls. This is so true, and even beyond true, it is necessary. You know why? Its precisely why Paul says “so that no man may boast before God”[3]. So just as I am, no crazy resolutions of long lists of giving things up, just good ol’ ordinary me resolving to squeeze time.

#Necessary: Hear this out – This is the counterintuitive part; Water was necessary for the miracle at Cana, only because water was ordinary, and this was so, for the extraordinary to take place. Christ could have used just about anything he wanted, why WATER? Because water ORDINARY. How often do we fall into the trap of falsely equating importance and needfulness with material rarities[4], bodily pleasures[5].  In contrast, Water is colorless, has no taste, no odor, yet the most essential of all our needs. This is a constant reminder to strip ourselves from distractions.

This lent, my resolve is to be like water molecules. What exactly happened to those water molecules at Cana. Personally, I think they blushed, when they finally met their maker. Ever wondered what blushing water looks like? WINE!

I too want to blush. This lent, I hope to make myself available, so that I become ordinary to Christ, hoping that Christ deems it necessary to use me to draw others close to Him.

On Easter, I hope to build on this and talk about the second part of the miracle, namely:

Water into Wine necessitates #Encounter with Christ which illustrates the thematic spirit of Lent. Just as the physical change in the substance of water into the substance of Wine, lent aims at catalyzing sensible amendment to our lives for or upon  that unique encounter with Christ.

Parallel that to Wine into Blood necessitating #Faith in Christ, the thematic spirit of the Resurrection. Here too, the seemingly unchanged wine (in appearance), taking on the new form of His Blood, aims at calling into mind our disposition vis-a-vis Christ, by FAITH alone, not senses[6]. .

The goal is to become Christ-like through His Blood. The revolution will not stop at the Merlot! 😉

Please allow me, to wish you and yours a fruitful lent. Remain Blessed

Pax

[6] I draw inspiration here from St Thomas Aquinas Pange Lingua- “On the night of that Last Supper, seated with His chosen band,He, the Paschal Victim eating, first fulfils the Law’s command; then as Food to His Apostles gives Himself with His own Hand. Word-made-Flesh, the bread of nature by His Word to Flesh He turns; wine into His Blood He changes; what though sense no change discerns?Only be the heart in earnest, faith her lesson quickly learns.”

America: Coppers gone Wild

Let’s cut to the chase.
Eric Garner. Mike Brown, Sean Bell… Flashback. Amadou Diallo…. #involuntary Martyrdom.

IMG_1664-0.JPG

I don’t think the brutality and excessive force even on to the point of death is a new phenomenon.

2 factors are contributing to the outburst in frequency of these events: One, the ubiquity of cell phone cameras. No one needs a jury these days. If you look long enough someone filmed it.
Secondly, the social media age has made the world a much smaller place. Not only most things don’t go ununnoticed, they get noticed rather quickly. For example, #Ferguson is as big as Ukraine and Iraq depending on the news channels you indulge in.

The formula in those specific events often goes as follow:
subject: Police.
Violent Verb: [insert Euphemism]
Object : Unarmed Black _______

I will explore this in my next blog post but hear me out: America’s relationship with the black community has been a nuptial where only one of the parties said “I do”…[unlike any other of America’s spouses]. Needless to say, in forced, arranged marriages, physical abuse is often inevitable.

The Jews in Egypt went through something similar. How did they get around it? Exodus. Tinkering thoughts….

Crimea votes. Should she be forced to play for the Team after she requested a trade ?

There is nothing , nothing more democratic than a referendum. A referendum is actually democracy by definition. By the people for the people!!!

If Biafrans want to secede from nigeria … Via a referendum… (…We know the end of that story)

Similarly If Crimeans want to ‘secede’ from Ukraine via a referendum… Let’s just say I am pretty sure we don’t need a Gallup Poll to predict the outcome of these votes…

Or hypothetically … Mmmh check this out, in the name of perspectives…. If Puerto Rico wanted to cut ties from USA… Via a referendum… Could the autonomy of Crimea vis-a-vis Ukraine be (loosely) comparable to that of PR… Towards the USA.. For the sake of perspectives, we shall make that leap. Now imagine how puerto RIcans would feel if they were told: you voted but you ain’t going nowhere. Or how would Mainland Americans feel about Puerto Ricans.

By virtue of such a referendum to even be mentioned, let alone take place, all ties between Kiev and south Eastern peninsula have been bruised, all relationships blistered, and the future shall never be the same. If the legitimacy of the Crimean referendum is rejected by the West … Crimea, forced to remain as part of Ukraine would be awkwardly unproductive. It’s like playing for a team after you’ve DEMANDED to be traded… It’s a soul-less body.

Oh yeah… But It’s not that straightforward, Darlington. It’s a lot more complicated than that.

Or is it ?

20140316-134230.jpg

Here are my general thoughts… It is extremely patronizing and elitist of any external body to publically reject the vote of the people of another autonomous body.

Granted, Putin is flexing his neo-coldwar muscles. But it’s unfair to force Crimeans to live in the Ukraine that they rejected…

John Kerry should come home. The US has more than enough on its plate. And as for The EU, it’s a LOSE-LOSE situation… sad to say …Putin was tactical in Syria … His tactics in the Crimean Crisis aren’t short of a step ahead of the west’s Either. I guess It’s in his backyard after all.

So I finally finished Breaking Bad….

Ten things I ‘liked’ from breaking bad: (in no specific order, just as I thought them)

10) Methamphetamine has 2 chiral isomers. Left and right. 🙂 – whenever they mentioned purity, it’s the percentage of maximizing one over the other….lol I promise last reference to chemistry. But I can’t help it.

9) the biggest horror stories I hear these days are people selling their shares too early in a startup company. It happened in Facebook, happened in Apple… It certainly did in Grey matter

8) The ends never justify the means… Or vice versa… …..But… NO BUTS!

7) Someone ought to consider if the fumes you inhale from synthesizing methamphetamine are more efficient than chemotherapy (at curing lung cancer). #imjustsaying. THIS is cancer research…. Although I am inclined to JUST accept that it made Walt “more alive” from a purely psychological point of view.

6) SKYLER! That’s a wife!!!
You can take your opinion and put it in a LosPollos mixing sauce if you don’t agree.

5) The composure of Gus Fring has to qualify as a virtue.

4) One Irony I’d like to point out for the scientific literate: [Of those looking for him…No one could say with absolute certainty Where was Heisenberg? #ALLPUNINTENDED Now what a great Alias!!!] all along it was right next to the hankering nucleus. #ALLPUNINTENDED!!!

3) “YOLO” and “better Call Saul” are sisters. The former was born right after the diagnosis. The latter, Welp, she followed her sister everywhere!

2) There is brave and there is Hector (Salamanca) The guy knew so much he couldn’t talk [another Irony]… As much as it may be wrong … I am thinking Stephen Hawkings of the breaking Bad World. Wonder if that was what the writer was going for …

1) I can see why some say it attempts to legitimize drug making… Others alluded to how The show mitigates the criminality of less potent drugs like… Marijuana. Everyone has a story. Vilifying Walter White doesn’t canonize you. Glorifying him doesn’t redeem you either. I think what the writer was going for was the journey… The unlikely KAFKAesque metamorphosis of your proverbial, innocent, high school teacher. Walter H White!

Y Cook?

Everytime I make a meal, there is a quote that keeps echoing. It is funny, witty and unfortunately true. I am paraphrasing Mrs Adichie but here it goes:

“I find it terribly mind-boggling that some people will entrust such a key survival skill in the hands of others”

She was referring to Women being expected to cook for men.

I still chuckle at it.
